Indigenous Tourism BC Training in Communities
Indigenous Tourism BC is pleased to announce secured funding to support training sessions throughout British Columbia Indigenous people throughout BC can now register to host a location for ITBC Tourism Training within their communities at no charge
Training Purpose :
- Promote careers in tourism and hospitality, focused on Indigenous tourism
- Prepare Indigenous people in the skills and certification requirements expected to work in the tourism and hospitality
- Improve Indigenous peoples’ strengths in sharing Indigenous culture and essential skills in comprehension and communication (i.e. storytelling)
- Develop employee, management, and employer skills in workplace safety, especially COVID
- Promote a safer place for workers by improving the awareness of harassment and prevention of harassment in the workplace
- Promote Knowledge Keepers and encourage further involvement
ITBC Participant Supports/Benefits:
- Childcare – specific to those students attending the training
- Transportation – limited to car-pooling when possible
- Living Allowance (Incentive)

Week 1 | Value of Indigenous Tourism – Understand the value of tourism to First Nations, our cultures, and tourism in the provincial and international landscapes Indigenous Ambassador – Introducing visitors to other Indigenous Nations and cultures throughout BC – indigenous people are ambassadors to neighbouring and other First Nations and Indigenous people |
My Nation, My Ancestors, Myself Developed by cultural leaders Cheryl Chapman and Mike Retasket, this one-day workshop inspires learners how to introduce themselves with cultural knowledge and grounding | |
Storytelling – Develop public speaking communications and how to formulate the story-hands-on with direct coaching | |
1 Day | Foodsafe Level 1 – Food safety, handling and sanitation training; for food service workers with the knowledge and skills to apply proper food handling and preparation techniques and to follow appropriate safety measures to prevent food-borne illness |
1 Day | First Aid To be offered in areas where First Aid is needed in the workplace, i.e., tours and adventure |
1 Day | Serving it Right (online) effective techniques to prevent problems related to the service of liquor |
½ Day | Super Host: Foundations of service quality – Basic customer service, communication, and teamwork skills A comprehensive and practical introduction to customer service best practices |
½ Day | Dealing with Difficult People – Knowing what to say and how to resolve difficult situations can be stressful. This online workshop offers solutions to frontline workers on how to turn a challenging situation into a positive one |
½ Day | Foundation of Workplace Safety Workplace health and safety within the context of BC’s tourism and hospitality industry. Designed to equip workers with essential health and safety information to help keep themselves and others safe on the job |
